About this event
Summer Read is a long-standing Black and Silver Activity. Before the start of summer, Black and Silver Senior Girlfriends select a self-help book to be read and discussed throughout multiple weeks of the summer. Sometimes discussions are held in person. Sometimes they are held online. Almost always, there is a culminating discussion held in person. This year's selected book is The Invincible Brain by Majid Fotuhi, MD, PhD. It demonstrates how targeted lifestyle changes can prevent, treat, and even reverse mild cognitive impairment, early Alzheimer's disease, dementia, ADHD, and concussion symptoms. During the first four weeks of July, we will discuss intelligence, brain functions, the aging brain, and the Invincible Brain program; assess our brain function; and record our results, highlighting the most important issues each of us needs to address. Once these four weeks are over, the real work begins. Each of us will make a plan to address our specific issues and begin a twelve-week journey to achieve our goals, checking in about every four weeks for ideas, inspiration, and encouragement. At the end of approximately twelve weeks, we have a culminating activity to celebrate our successes and discuss our invincible future. If this book is like past Summer Reads, it will not only help us make small improvements in our lives, but also help us forge closer connections with each other. Below is the Summer Read schedule:
• Part One: A New Definition of Intelligence - July 9, 2026
• Part Two: Plasticity, Memory, and Other Fantastic Brain Functions - July 16, 2026
• Part Three: Understanding and Strengthening the Aging Brain - July 23, 2026
• Part Four: The Invincible Brain Program - July 30, 2026
• 1st Check-in - August 27, 2026
• 2nd Check-in - September 24, 2026 (via mail-in)
• Culminating Activity - November 5, 2026
All except the culminating activity will be virtual.
